First active pumped storage station in Israel
storage capacity for 10 hours
A hydroelectric power station situated in the Gilboa area, for the generation and storage of electricity using pumped storage technology. This is the first active station of its kind in Israel, providing an availability to the electricity grid. The station utilizes the unconsumed production balances of Israel Electric Corporation during off-peak hours, in order to store energy to be used by the electricity sector during the peak hours of electricity consumption.
The station operates using two huge water reservoirs positioned at a height difference of 500 meters between them. During off-peak hours, water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir, and is pumped back with great intensity during the peak hours, following a process from which green electricity is produced.
